Classes at Cabrillo College ~
Santa Cruz, California
Do you live in the Santa Cruz area and want to learn more about the art of quilt making? I offer a variety of classes throughout the year at Cabrillo College, in the Extension program. To sign up, follow the links below the classes to access Cabrillo Extension’s sign up process.
Quilters Open Workshop
Bring your quilt project and Jo will provide skilled guidance, a communal and creative environment, and a spacious sewing studio. As you work on your individual project, there will be weekly tips and tutorials to help you expand your knowledge of quilt making, such as batch piecing and how to chain stitch blocks to speed up assembly time, and making mitered corners nice and neat! Jo will be available during class for any help you may need with your project.
Introduction to the Art of Quiltmaking
Design and create a quilt from start to finish as you learn all of the necessary skills and terminology. You will learn about choosing fabrics based on hue and saturation, quilt pattern design, basic quilt math, quilting tools, proper cutting techniques, how to create your quilt sandwich, and so much more! Each class will include a brief presentation, hands-on activities, demonstrations, lots of time for practice and experimentation, and a guest speaker in the last class! By the end of class you will have a 12” x 18” quilt, and the skills to make many more at home!
Memorial Quilt Class
Clothing from your past can hold so much meaning! Memorial quilts are a great way to create something new from something old that is beautiful and meaningful. Jo will demonstrate each step so you can preserve and transform your beloved, sentimental clothing into your own memorial quilt! Learn how to stabilize garment fabric for quilting, work with different fabric weights in one project, use preexisting design elements to help you create your quilt design, and how to sew with invisible thread to quilt your project together.
